Beginning November 1st, Start with a Story will also take place Saturdays and Sundays at the Glenn Dyer Jail Facility  in downtown Oakland. This Alameda County jail facility is located at 550-6th St., and is accessible by public transportation. An estimated 100-150 children visit this facility on weekends!

We are in need of volunteers for this facility. If you are interested, please let us know. Volunteer time slots will be available from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. AND  12 p.m. – 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

  • I would like to learn more about Start With a Story. Is this the program where volunteers read to children visiting someone in the jail? I am interested in doing this, and, if the children take books home, I have many to read and donate.

    • Hi Diane,

Yes, you’ve found the right program! :-) Please give us a call at (510) 745-1486 if you would like to talk with someone directly about volunteering or donating.

      Best regards,

The Start with a Story team
